Our efforts have stretched beyond the playing fields as we readily agreed to assist local clubs with highly successful initiatives to include fund raising drives, grant writing and creating innovative youth development programs. Our partners have had ownership stakes in a USL franchise and separately initiated and drove the formation of a new Bermudian based USL 2 franchise.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

CLYDE BEST

I have been involved with Richard and Robert Calderon on a number of exciting football related projects over the past twenty years.

I was particularly impressed by the high level of professionalism they displayed when developing and managing the Clyde Best tournament. This event attracted a number of highly rated youth teams from the USA and included Bermuda Youth National teams.

I would have no hesitation recommending Richard & Robert to anyone that requires professional, courteous and proactive service. Their knowledge of football is exemplary and their comprehensive management of tournaments is outstanding.

Clyde Best | West Ham United, 1968-1976

SEAN MURPHY

I’ve worked with both Richard and Robert Calderon in working part-ownership with the Rage Soccer Club. My interactions and experiences have been outstanding and professional.

Sean Murphy | Academy Director | Reading Rage SC

OWEN FINBERG

Over the last 15 years I have developed an extremely rewarding personal and professional relationship with Richard and Robert Calderon. I have come to know them through my recruiting work in Bermuda as Head Coach for South Kent School, through soccer travel with the Connecticut Olympic Development Program and through years of personal interactions both in Bermuda and the United States. I am pleased to offer a glowing recommendation of them and their work with prep school college placement, soccer tourism and tournament organization.

The Calderon’s have been instrumental in multiple initiatives on behalf of improving opportunities for youth footballers in Bermuda and abroad. They were the driving force behind the first-ever Prep School Tour, providing the idea, planning, securing sponsorship and traveling to New England with dozens of young Bermudian student-athletes. Their personal care and dedication to improving the lives of others has led to dozens of Bermudians earning places in prep school and, subsequently, colleges through their vision and hard work. Bermuda’s location, climate, pristine beaches, football culture, hotels and restaurants make it an ideal destination for soccer travel. Through my role as a head coach with the Connecticut Olympic Development Program I saw first-hand how first-rate Bermuda team travel can be when organized by the Calderons. We brought several teams down for the Clyde Best Tournament and had an unforgettable experience with a seamlessly run tournament, including all logistics, and a remarkable tourist experience. The connections that the Calderon’s have with businesses around the island, the Bermuda Football Association (where Richard is a past President), and Bermuda Tourism are second to none and allow them the ability to put together a first-class itinerary for any age, gender, size group or team, whether in a tournament setting or training format. I treasure my personal and professional relationship with the Calderons and am in regular contact with them. From my experience and seeing their work with others, I have no doubt that FootSail will be a wonderfully successful venture that benefits all those with whom they work.

WHAT WE'VE DONE

Reading Rage Club Super-Y League Program

image 7
2005 - 2008

Reading Rage Club Super-Y League Program...The BFF Directors acquired a 30% stake in the Reading Rage, a USL/Super-Y League franchise, to use as a development path for Bermudian youth players into North American Prep Schools, Colleges and professional ranks.

The Super-Y league (a summer league) was at the time, the United States top National Youth Soccer League and catered to U-13's through U-20's. It was where the top 5% of the U.S. youth players competed and was a top source for College and University coaches when recruiting and extending scholarships. Ownership guaranteed the BFF a seat on the Board and Coach/Player selection committees. Sponsorship support from the local corporate community, led by the Bank of Bermuda Foundation, afforded 5 local youth players the opportunity to spend 5 weeks playing in the USL Super-Y League with the Reading Rage in the first year at no cost to their families. The program continued for several years and remained free to the participants.

The BFF creates U.S. Prep School Tour

image 11image 11
2008-2010

The BFF creates US Prep School Tour….BFF executives in consultation with several New England Prep School Soccer coaches created the first of several annual visits to leading New England Prep Schools, exposing on average, 16 Bermudian student/athletes to a snapshot of a student's life at 10 Prep schools, on each five (5) day trip. The program which started in August 2008, led to dozens of Bermudian student athletes securing places culminating with many matriculating to top Universities on student/athlete (soccer) scholarships.

BFF executives secured sponsorship allowing all 16 student/athletes to participate at no cost. The program was eventually transferred to the Bermuda Football Association when BFF executives assumed senior roles in the organization. Sponsors remained in place.

Bermuda Football Association

image 2

Bermuda Football Association….The notion that Bermuda’s football was in a free-fall was largely anecdotal to BFF members but with every program completed, it became increasingly clear that there was a real need for a comprehensive examination of the local football environment and a clear way forward. BFF members challenge and bring their energy and knowledge to the BFA.

Starting in late 2007, the BFF managed to secure the services of Joe Babiec, a leading Strategic Planner whose impressive body of work included the Bermuda Alliance for Tourisms’ Long Term Strategic Plan. With direct involvement of many past and current football players, coaches, administrators and sponsors, the framework for what would become the Bermuda Football Association’s Strategic Plan for “Rebuilding the Competitiveness of Bermuda Football” was completed. BFF members would run on this platform and win seats on the BFA Executive Committee including the role of BFA President. Many of the programs created at the BFF would be adopted by the BFA including the programs’ sponsorship support.

The Bermuda Football Coaches Association (BFCA)

image 12image 11

THE Bermuda Football Coaches Association (BFCA)…..BFF members with the support of Joe Babiec, led a small group of former Bermuda National Team coaches and ABC Football Foundation partners, through a series of meetings culminating in the creation of a Strategic Plan, Constitution and Implementation Plan leading to the formation of the Bermuda Football Coaches Association. Soon thereafter, the BFCA was formally ratified with a full slate of executive members.

The BFA’s 2009-2012 Strategic Plan outlined a pathway to reverse the decline in Bermuda’s football competitiveness and ultimately achieve its full potential at all levels of competition. One of the key issues outlined in the plan was the need to address Player Development, in part using highly qualified coaches. Working directly with Jacques Crevoisier, the BFCA introduced several coach education and Certification/License programs with the introduction and full implementation of the UEFA ‘B’ License at the top.

BFF members organized all aspects of a BFCA Speaker’s Night (fundraiser) featuring Gérard Houllier, the FC Redbull Sporting Director and former French Senior National Team Managerand Manager for Liverpool FC, PSG, Lyon F.C. and Aston Villa.

JAVIER MALLO SPORTS CONDITIONING, NUTRITION AND TRAUMA SEMINAR

Presented by FootSail Ltd

VENUE: National Sports Centre - North Field & Pavilion

2.5 DAYS 15 LECTURE HOURS 8 THEORY CLASSES 2 PRACTICAL CLASSES 40 PARTICIPANTS

SEMINAR OVERVIEW

The aim of the seminar is to present a novel methodological approach to team sports training. During the last decade, coaches (and physical education teachers as an extension) have learned the principles of individual sports and applied them to collective sports such as football, basketball, handball, hockey, etc. However, team sports have a completely different nature than individual disciplines and, hence, require for a divergent coaching perspective based on: (1) the specific characteristics of the sportsperson, and (2) the internal logic of each team sport. During this seminar we will present, from a theoretical and practical point of view, the latest coaching and methodological principles adopted by elite European teams during the recent years. Even though, we will take football as the reference sport to explain the model, the coaches/teachers will see that most of the concepts can be trans-disciplinary applied to other team sports. In addition, we will include relevant medical aspects which can help coaches and teachers in their daily practices.

SYLLABUS OUTLINE
